We all know secrets are meant to be kept. But would cafes genuinely benefit from it if their business is kept hidden?
Behold, we have pinned down some of the hidden cafes in Johor Bahru you might have never been to (or heard of)!
Malaysia is not short of pasar malam. But, if we compare the amount of pasar malam and cafes over a scale, it would not take more than 0.001 seconds for cafes to out-weight pasar malam.
We’ll stop our rambling so you can finally learn of these hidden gems among Johor Bahru cafes in 2022.
Get ready for your cafe-hopping hobby, and have a little unique memory other tourists did not know they should have!

Sunday Morning Studio

This is a relatively new, Japanese theme cafe opened in Jalan Dhoby, Johor Bahru, right above Magnum. It is located on the 2nd floor of the old building, so take the stairs up carefully.
Sunday Morning Studio is a combination of a cafe and film lab. Once inside, you will find antique cameras on display and a small area selling some merch.
It’s a small shop with limited space, so each table has a maximum of 4 seats only.
All of their food and beverages are not only delicious but also affordable.
We recommend their signature homemade curry rice and udon noodle soup if you are here for a filling meal.
If you are here to chill and have some sweets, their signature passion fruit and coconut milk mousse is a dessert you should not overlook. It is rich in coconut milk with fresh passion fruit topped with coconut flakes.
All of their coffee beans are hand-roasted in the house! So, from an exciting coffeeholic to you, DEFINITELY try their hand-drip coffee. The flavor is light enough that you don’t taste an overwhelmingly strong coffee.
If you love coffee with a more substantial base, try their Cafe Au Lait. A medium roasted coffee base paired with any of their homemade desserts will make you feel warm and fuzzy!

Moving on to another spot for coffee addicts!
Brewsmith is a Johor Bahru minimalist cafe located in The Lakefront @ Southkey. This is definitely the place to have high tea (more like high coffee) with your companions on a lovely day.
You will only find coffee and cakes here because the main business here in Brewsmith is skewed towards selling their filtered coffee, espresso, and catering services.
Nonetheless, you should give this Johor Bahru cafe a chance. Rather than chatting across a table, you sit side-to-side next to one another to foster a closer bond!
Since they do not have a menu, their barista will ask for your personal coffee preference. Then, depending on what you desire, you can choose if you want your coffee to have a nutty, fruity, or any flavors they have in store for you.
Their burnt cheesecake is a local favorite for its richness in cheese and silky smooth texture. But, of course, there are other desserts like lemon meringue tart (another dessert we recommend to try!) and chocolate tart.
Their desserts change every day. So the dessert you pick will be based on the quantity on the day of your visit and your luck!
We recommend renting a car with Gem Car Rental to help you get around Johor Bahru easily as you go on your Johor Bahru cafe hopping or any other activities!

A Bee-and-honey theme cafe located in Southkey, Johor Bahru, is the hidden buzz (pun intended)!
We bee-live you will have a fantastic experience with their friendly customer service and raw honey-based delicacies.
Rather than using artificial syrups, this is the only cafe in Johor Bahru that uses natural honey for their food and beverages. It is in their waffles, pizza, cake, latte, milkshake, and even honey beer (yes, it is very real).
For the curious bees, you may ask the owner how their honey is harvested. They will gladly share with you passionately!
It’s a MUST to order their Medovik Honey Cake (with the tiny bee on top) and Honey Mousse Cheese (a cake that looks like a slice of cheese from Tom & Jerry). You can pair it with any coffee or tea to match their desserts.
There is a small section for visitors to buy some flowers. So, it’s a great place to enjoy your sweet time with your loved ones and perhaps pair it with a bouquet of love.

PanKour Coffee Roastery

Another cozy cafe in Johor Bahru. More specifically, in Taman Setia Eco Cascadia. This cafe is located on the 2nd floor, and you might find an orange cat welcoming your presence while having a lazy sunbath moment.
As if colored by the shade and ambiance, you will feel a sense of laziness and an urge to just chill here (or maybe caused by the cat’s yawn?).
We would go for their iced mocha or iced latte on a hot day for a cooldown. If you fancy a hot latte or even a glass of iced strawberry milk, they have other selections for you.
Other than coffee, you will find a variety of pastries like tarts and cakes on display near the front counter. Try their lemon cheese cake and if sour is not really your thing, ask for recommendations that tailor to your taste buds.
If you are here during the afternoon, they have an Afternoon Tea Set at RM85.90 that comes with a 4” cake, a slice of cake, 10 pieces of mixed tarts, 1 Hot Latte, and 1 English Breakfast Tea Bags.

It sure feels good to be a cat with the freedom to laze around the whole day.
