Fuel up the car and your appetite — it’s durian time!
There’s something magical about durian season in Malaysia. Love it or hate it, durian is a cultural experience — and if you love it, there’s no better way to enjoy it than on a proper road trip with good company, empty tupperware, and an empty stomach.
Whether you’re a seasoned durian hunter or just looking for a fun foodie day trip from Johor Bahru, here are the best places to drive to during durian season — usually from May to August.
Let’s go, durian lovers. 😋
🌳 1. Bekok – Durian Farms & Kampung Vibes
Drive time: ~2.5 hours from JB
Bekok is a peaceful town surrounded by fruit orchards, and durian is its pride and joy.
What you’ll find:
- Family-run durian farms (some allow you to eat fresh at the orchard)
- Fresh kampung-style durians: XO, D24, and more
- Sungai Bantang Waterfall nearby if you want a nature break
Tips: Call ahead — some farms require booking during peak season.
🌿 2. Kulai – Hidden Gems Just Outside JB
Drive time: ~45 mins – 1 hour
A lot of people overlook Kulai, but it’s home to many smaller durian orchards tucked between villages.
What’s great:
- Less commercial, more local feel
- Easy to do a half-day trip
- Pair it with a meal at Kulai’s famous Hakka restaurants
Durian types: D13, Kampung durian, D101
🌄 3. Yong Peng – Durian & Foochow Flavours
Drive time: ~1.5 hours
This small town is known for its Chinese Foochow food — and come durian season, it’s a great combo stop.
What to try:
- D24, Tekka, Red Prawn (Ang He)
- Visit local farms or just stop by roadside stalls
- Don’t forget to tapau some kompia or peanut soup too!
🥭 4. Air Hitam – Quick, Easy, Delicious
Drive time: ~1 hour 15 minutes
You probably know it for its ceramics, but Air Hitam also has some of the most convenient roadside durian stalls in southern Malaysia.
Why it’s good:
- No-frills, affordable durian feasting
- Lots of variety depending on season
- Great for short drives or spontaneous cravings
🏞️ 5. Kahang & Paloh – For the Serious Durian Lover
Drive time: ~2–3 hours
Remote, rural, and absolutely full of fruit. These areas are home to older trees, meaning richer, creamier durian.
What you’ll find:
- Kampung durians with intense flavour
- Honest prices, direct from the farmer
- Some farms offer overnight stays during peak season
📅 When’s the Best Time to Go?
Durian season in Johor usually starts around May or June and can stretch till early August depending on the weather.
Peak time = late June to early July.
🚗 What to Bring on a Durian Road Trip
- Wet wipes + tissues (a must!)
- Extra containers for takeaway durian
- A cooler bag or icebox
- Cash (some rural farms don’t use QR code)
- Water + mints (you’ll need both)
- A big appetite and sense of adventure
